Buying guide
Automatic traffic barriers Types, uses and how to choose
An automatic traffic barrier decides when vehicles may pass a point, without anyone lifting an arm by hand. This guide covers the main types, where each one fits and what to check before you buy or hire.

An automatic traffic barrier is a powered arm, often called a boom, that opens and closes a lane on command. The command can come from a handheld remote, a keypad, an access card or fob, an intercom, a push button or a sensor that spots an approaching vehicle. Inside the housing, a motor and control board move the arm, and safety electronics stop it if it meets an obstruction.
The reason to automate is to take people out of harm's way. With a manual drop-arm, somebody has to walk to the gate and lift it, often standing in front of the vehicle they are letting through. An automatic barrier lets that person stay at a distance: in a gatehouse, behind a kerb or across the yard.
On a workplace, keeping pedestrians and vehicles apart sits at the centre of managing transport risk, as the Health and Safety Executive's guidance on separating pedestrians and vehicles explains. A barrier that controls exactly when traffic moves is one of the simplest ways to put that into practice.
Types of automatic traffic barrier
Barriers differ most in how they are powered, and that decides how they are installed and where they make sense.
| Type | Power | Installation | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fixed mains-powered barrier | Mains electricity | Plinth or base, ducting and a cable back to a supply | Permanent car parks, offices and gated estates |
| Battery-only barrier | Rechargeable battery | Free-standing, but the battery must be charged or swapped regularly | Short spells of use where recharging is easy |
| Solar powered barrier | Solar panel charging a battery | Free-standing or post-mounted, with no cabling | Construction, temporary works, rural entrances and events |
| Manual drop-arm (for comparison) | None | Free-standing | Quiet gates where someone is always on hand |
Arm design matters too. A long straight boom needs clear height above the lane to open fully. A folding or articulated arm, like the one on the Dofygate 4, bends as it rises, so it needs much less headroom and uses less energy on every cycle.
Where automatic traffic barriers are used
- Construction sites and compounds: controlling the main gate, satellite compounds and welfare areas.
- Haul road crossings: holding plant back while people on foot cross, then letting it through.
- Waste and recycling: weighbridge lanes, tipping areas and household recycling centres.
- Depots, yards and ports: separating HGV movements from staff and visitors.
- Roads and rail: temporary closures, bus gates and works access during major schemes.
- Farms: biosecurity points where every vehicle must be washed before entry.
- Events: lane control and car parks at shows and festivals.
Our case studies show several of these in practice, from the Oxford Station works to recycling centres run by Veolia.
How to choose the right barrier
Opening width
Measure the gap you need to close. The Dofygate 4 covers 3 to 6 m with one unit or a pair.
Power on site
Is there a mains supply where the barrier will stand, and will it stay there? If not, a solar powered barrier avoids trenching and cabling costs.
How long it stays
A permanent entrance, or one that moves with the work? Portable bases let you relocate in minutes.
Traffic volume
Busy entrances use more energy. Ask about larger battery options such as a Battery Booster base.
Who opens it
A remote for the gate operator, a keypad or fob for staff, an intercom for visitors, a sensor for free-flowing exits.
Safety features
Look for obstruction detection that stops and reverses the arm, and a design that keeps operators away from vehicles.
Buy or hire
Short projects can suit hire; longer use usually favours buying. Both are available direct and through our partners.
Support
Check the warranty, how fast a failed unit is replaced and whether annual servicing is offered.
How much does an automatic traffic barrier cost?
It depends on the type, the controls and whether you buy or hire. With a mains-powered barrier, budget for the groundworks, ducting and electrical connection as well, because they can add a great deal to the total. A solar powered barrier has no installation costs; ask us for a quote.
Are automatic traffic barriers safe around pedestrians?
Barriers made for shared spaces include obstruction detection that stops and reverses the arm. The Dofygate 4 also closes from the side rather than dropping from above. A barrier controls vehicles, so people on foot should still have their own clearly marked route.
Can an automatic barrier work without mains electricity?
Yes. A solar powered barrier charges its own battery from a built-in panel, so it can stand anywhere there is daylight, with no cable to a supply.
Is a boom gate the same as an automatic traffic barrier?
Usually, yes. Boom gate, boom barrier, rising arm barrier and automatic traffic barrier are all names for a powered arm that opens and closes a lane.
Can I hire automatic traffic barriers for a short project?
Yes. Dofygate barriers can be hired direct from us or through partners who serve the highways, construction and traffic management markets.
