Case studies

Automatic traffic barriers at work

Six sites, six different traffic problems: how recycling operators, contractors, farms and event teams use Dofygate solar powered barriers to keep people and vehicles apart.

Veolia: safer household waste recycling centres

The problem

High-footfall recycling centres, including one in Brighton, where members of the public and staff move around working vehicles.

The solution

Three Dofygate barriers now direct the traffic. Their narrow footprint fits cramped layouts, and because there was no cabling to install they were in use almost immediately.

The result

Better-controlled, safer sites for staff and visitors, with barriers that keep working and support that responds quickly.

Biffa: yard safety without groundworks

The problem

No power near the entrance, contractor and vehicle access that needed managing, and fixed barriers that were too inflexible and not safe enough.

The solution

Portable solar powered Dofygates worked by the weighbridge team, which move whenever operations change and form part of the site's fire response plan.

The result

The yard now handles 80 to 90 vehicle movements daily without fuss, with less risk of injury or damage and no money tied up in permanent infrastructure.

Botley Road, Oxford: buses through a road closure

The problem

Botley Road was shut where it passes under the railway, yet 15 buses an hour and construction vehicles still needed a way through, and members of the public had to be protected.

The solution

Kier obtained four solar automatic barriers through Sunbelt Rentals for the Botley Road and Cripley Road junction. A single traffic marshal operates all four while standing well away from the vehicles.

The result

Traffic flowed better, accident risk fell and daily set-up was quick, with nothing left obstructing the road. The barriers started work on 11 April 2023.

Livestock farms: biosecurity that runs itself

The problem

Manual gates meant biosecurity depended on people following the rules every time, leaving pig and poultry units open to disease, with heavy welfare and financial consequences.

The solution

Automatic Dofygates at farm entrances, interlocked with wheel-wash systems: vehicles wait until the wash reaches pressure before the barrier opens.

The result

Controlled access, less risk of disease, less manual effort and a log of every vehicle washed.

  • Events

Bolesworth International: easier event traffic

The problem

Tracsis managed the event traffic and needed to separate horseboxes from cars, protect staff from frustrated drivers and replace heavy manual drop-arm barriers.

The solution

Wheeled, lightweight Dofygates that staff open remotely from a safe distance, simple enough for anyone on the team to run.

The result

Arrivals flowed more smoothly, staff felt safer and more sure of themselves, and the barriers could be shifted quickly each time the layout changed.

Ecogen Recycling: one entrance grew to seven barriers

The problem

Building a new site in Hampshire from March 2020, Ecogen wanted vehicle and pedestrian control to match its safety-first approach.

The solution

Dofygates on the entrances and exits, refined over time with extra barriers in tricky spots and added warning beacons.

The result

Independent safety advisers praised the arrangement as best practice in site traffic control. Seven barriers now operate on site.

“Very minimal maintenance issues.”Toby Mottram, Operations Manager, Ecogen Recycling Ltd
